The Transformative Power of Journaling: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Essence of Journaling
The question of why I maintain a journal rarely needs to be asked, yet when it is, I reflect on the themes and ideas that emerge from my writing. Where do I draw inspiration?
Writing is fundamentally a self-centered pursuit. Is that a negative trait? The answer is both yes and no—it's a duality that holds positive aspects.
Most of my inspiration stems from my handwritten journal or diary—terms I use interchangeably—a deeply personal space where I capture my thoughts shortly after waking each morning. It offers a fleeting moment of introspection.
This space is undeniably valuable, where every word reflects my innermost thoughts.
My journal embodies my essence.
I have been documenting my life since I first learned to write, encouraged by my mother. That's over fifty years of recording my musings, reflections, fears, relationships, poetry, short stories, and the myriad complex emotions that often lurk in the more daunting corners of my mind—thousands of snippets filled with raw emotion.
Within my journal, I discover clarity and a means of stress relief. It serves as a sanctuary where I can vent my frustrations without burdening the outside world.
Or do I share them? Occasionally, yes. Particularly when my inner self needs to voice the harsh realities of life. A single thought penned in the morning can evolve into a poem inspired by frustration or morph into a creative essay contemplating the world's end—all conjured by the stroke of my pen or the tap on my keyboard. Writers wield this unique power, as you might understand.
Recently, during a conversation with a friend, I felt immense irritation due to his continual interruptions while I spoke. It's undoubtedly one of my greatest pet peeves. To him, my words seemed insignificant. Yet, in my journal, those suppressed thoughts held immense value. I chronicled this experience in my journal just yesterday and resolved to write a short poem about it.

Is it a worthy poem? The quality is inconsequential. It is my expression.
It serves as a reflection of my frustration and my coping mechanism for that annoyance. Those precious words even earned me three cents on Medium and two new free subscribers on Substack via my Facebook link—enough to treat myself to a Starbucks espresso.
So, did I write for financial gain? The answer is both yes and no. I write because it is an intrinsic part of who I am. Whether my writing is good or bad is irrelevant; it represents my thoughts and feelings. That three cents is a small acknowledgment from someone who appreciated my work, a gesture worth far more than its monetary value. I may have made a positive impact on someone’s day—
And that is more than sufficient for me.
