Recent studies have identified two specific genes associated with alcohol-related violence and antisocial behavior: the HTR2B and CDH13 genes. These genes interact with the MAOA-L gene, which produces an enzyme linked to aggression and risk-taking, thereby increasing the likelihood of violent behavior. Dubbed the "Warrior Gene," the MAOA-L gene has been shown to heighten susceptibility to these negative actions.

A significant study conducted at the University of California investigated risk-taking behaviors in financial games among players. Those with the MAOA-L gene variant exhibited a tendency to take greater risks when potential rewards were high. However, a more revealing study in Finland examined 900 criminals, many of whom had committed violent acts while under the influence of alcohol. The findings indicated that those carrying the MAOA-L gene were far more prone to violent outbursts, regardless of their backgrounds or experiences.

The Finnish Study's Insights

The Finnish research highlighted that alcohol might amplify the effects of the MAOA-L gene, which has been identified as a key factor in antisocial behavior and violent outbursts. Interestingly, individuals without the MAOA-L gene could consume significantly larger amounts of alcohol without exhibiting the same propensity for violence. The research indicated that for every kilogram of alcohol consumed annually, instances of violence increased by 2.6%, further demonstrating the gene's influence.

As we uncover the biological mechanisms behind alcohol-induced violence, we may one day develop methods to predict and prevent these behaviors. For now, it's up to individuals to assess their susceptibility to poor decision-making while under the influence. For me, the answer was clear: I had caused enough harm to myself and those around me and chose to abstain completely. I now understand that my ability to behave appropriately while drinking is beyond my control; the safest choice is total avoidance of alcohol.
