Chapter 1: Jack Rico's Academic Journey
At just 15 years old, Jack Rico captured the attention of his community and the media by achieving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His ambitions don’t stop there; he is now aiming for a master’s degree.
Jack's passion for history has paved the way for him to make his own mark as the youngest graduate in the university's 64-year history. Remarkably, he also holds a total of five college degrees, which includes four associate’s degrees from Fullerton College as of 2020.
While many his age were focused on sports, Jack found joy in literature. As a result, his parents shifted their focus from sports to nurturing his love for reading, which proved beneficial for his academic growth.
His college success can be attributed to his ability to choose classes that genuinely interested him, rather than a generic curriculum. This engagement with specific subjects, rather than textbooks, fueled his knowledge.
Jack’s academic path was further enhanced by his homeschooling experience starting in the third grade, alongside his sister. Traditional schooling didn’t suit him, so his mother recognized that homeschooling would better accommodate his exceptional abilities.
A pivotal moment came when Jack expressed a desire to visit the White House for his birthday at the age of four. His mother challenged him to learn all the presidents, and within a week, he revealed he already knew them all. This moment highlighted Jack's extraordinary intellect to his mother.
Family vacations were designed as cultural experiences, both domestically and abroad. When Jack learned from Fullerton College that he could enroll by passing an assessment exam, his mother, who worked there, seized the opportunity.
Jack's college journey kicked off with a class on world religions. Following his graduation from Fullerton College, he chose to continue his education in Nevada to attend in-person classes during the pandemic, with his family commuting weekly to support him.
Despite his impressive achievements, Jack’s parents affirm he is just like any other typical teenager, enjoying video games, writing screenplays, and spending time with family and friends.
Jack reflects on his education, expressing that the traditional schooling he missed was effectively compensated by his parents' efforts. He feels a sense of accomplishment and pride, sharing that the journey has been long but rewarding. “Wow, I did this,” he states, serving as an inspiration for anyone with aspirations that hard work and support can lead to remarkable achievements.
