Unlocking the Power of Job_ID in MidJourney and Discord

Understanding Job_ID
When working with the AI image generator MidJourney, a crucial element is the job_id. You might find yourself asking, “What exactly is a job_id?” or perhaps, “Why is it necessary?” The order of these questions isn't important, but let's dive into the details.
What is a Job_ID?
A job_id serves as a unique identifier for any task you've executed in MidJourney, whether through the /imagine command or by upscaling, remixing, or re-rolling images. Essentially, it distinguishes the results you receive, whether it's a single image or a grid of images. The job_id is formatted as a thirty-two-digit hexadecimal number, represented as follows:
XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX
For instance, examples of my generated images include:
- 98c76744-0909-419b-b4c7-61f784dae845
- 68e6c1b9-7ddf-4eec-9c49-9cbfbc5e09f1
Now that you understand what a job_id is, let’s explore its significance.
Why is Job_ID Important?
This small piece of information is vital for instructing MidJourney to re-display the results of your tasks within Discord using the /show command. After retrieving the job_id from your gallery, you can summon that specific job in the chat, displaying the resultant image along with options for upscaling and variations. This capability allows you to revisit any job you created, even if you no longer have access to the original message.
MidJourney's User Manual
There are various scenarios where you might want to re-display your work in a different channel (or even the same one). Some reasons include:
- Sharing your creations with someone on another server.
- Wanting to revisit a piece you initially generated in a public MidJourney channel without scrolling through extensive chat history.
- Accessing an older job that you wish to modify again.
- Working with a job that has been shadow banned, making it easier to manage than through default methods.
How to Retrieve Your Job_ID
You can obtain the job_id in several ways. The simplest method is to view the image on your profile page, open it, and select “Copy… Job ID” from the menu.
Another approach is to open the image in your browser and extract the job_id from the filename, either when downloading it or viewing it online. For example:

Make sure you only copy the job_id portion and not the entire filename (for instance, avoid including the .png suffix) as MidJourney requires precision with job_ids.
A third option is to use the envelope reaction on the Discord message. The MidJourney bot will then send you a direct message containing the prompt, job_id, image seed, and the resulting image (or grid of images).
How to Use Job_ID
As long as the job_id corresponds to a job you created, all you need is the /show command. Simply input it into a Discord channel where MidJourney is enabled, and the image will appear.
For newcomers to MidJourney, it’s okay if job_ids seem complex at first, but as you become more familiar with the platform, they will prove to be invaluable tools.
