Understanding Your iPhone's Battery Icon
Have you ever wondered why your iPhone's battery icon sometimes changes from green to yellow? The answer is quite straightforward. The yellow icon signifies that Energy Saving Mode is activated, while the green icon indicates normal operation. In this section, I'll guide you on how to switch between these modes and explain the benefits of the yellow battery icon.
The yellow icon represents Power Saving Mode, a feature designed to extend your iPhone’s battery duration. When activated, this mode temporarily halts background app refresh, automatic email fetching, and other iOS functions—continuing until your battery is charged to 80 percent.
Typically, Power Saving Mode is triggered when your battery level falls below 20 percent. At this point, a low battery notification appears. If you tap this alert too hastily, the yellow battery symbol is activated immediately and will remain until the battery is charged back up to 80 percent.
How to Disable Energy Saving Mode
If you prefer not to wait for the battery to reach 80 percent before disabling Energy Saving Mode, you can manually turn it off to regain full access to your iPhone's features.
To do so, follow these simple steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and select ‘Battery.’
- Toggle the switch next to “Energy Saving Mode” to the off position.
Alternatively, you can add Power Saving Mode to your Control Center for easier access. Go back to ‘Settings,’ select ‘Control Center,’ and tap the plus sign next to “Energy Saving Mode.” Now, when you swipe down from the upper right corner (or swipe up on iPhones with a home button), you'll see the battery icon for Power Saving Mode. Tapping it will allow you to activate or deactivate the mode quickly.
Duration of Battery Life Extension
When Energy Saving Mode is enabled, the lifespan of your iPhone’s battery increases. The exact duration will vary depending on your iPhone model. Generally, older models like the iPhone 8 see a more significant benefit from Power Saving Mode, potentially lasting a few extra hours, while newer models like the iPhone 14 may exhibit only a minimal extension.
Battery Optimization for Apple Watch
As a rule of thumb, if you want to maximize your iPhone's battery performance, activate Power Saving Mode to change the battery icon to yellow. Interestingly, this feature is now also available on the Apple Watch!
