Embrace Change: Lessons from My Quarter-Life Crisis Journey

Written on

Understanding Our Fear of the Future

As humans, we often resist change and the uncertainty that comes with it. This instinct can be traced back to our survival instincts, but in today's world, we find ourselves excessively worried about what lies ahead. I can certainly relate; I've spent countless hours fretting over future possibilities, often imagining the worst-case scenarios.

Did any of those fears actually materialize? Not a single one. Yet, I still allowed anxiety to consume my time and energy.

My Journey Through a Quarter-Life Crisis

My constant worrying and refusal to change nearly pushed me into a deep depression while working in a job I despised. After completing my Bachelor's degree, I accepted a position as a programmer at a reputable consulting firm. The company and my colleagues were fantastic, but I found myself feeling miserable. I spent 40 hours each week feeling unfulfilled and wasting time, returning home each evening in tears.

I knew I needed to make a change, but I faced a significant hurdle: I didn’t want to squander any more of my time on a meaningless job.

I realized what I truly desired: a passion, a purpose, and the chance to work on something meaningful. Unfortunately, my current role was not providing that.

Deciding to Embrace Change

It took me several months to muster the courage to leave my job and pursue something new. At just 22 years old, I felt too old to switch careers or return to school.

Throughout this period, I was plagued by worries about how others would perceive my choices, how I would manage financially, and whether I would excel in a new field. I even questioned if I would be the oldest in my new endeavors.

However, I eventually posed a crucial question to myself: What is the worst that could happen?

The answer was eye-opening: nothing catastrophic would occur. The worst-case scenario would be returning to my parents' house and working another 40-hour week on mindless projects. This didn’t seem so bad. Sure, it might bruise my self-esteem, but that’s something I could recover from.

When you find yourself hesitating to make a decision, try to step back and view your situation from a distance. How insignificant does it appear? Ask yourself, what is the worst that could happen? Suddenly, the fear diminishes.

“Expect the best. Prepare for the worst. Capitalize on what comes.”

Taking the Leap

Have you always dreamed of launching an online writing career? Don't hesitate—take that leap! The worst outcome could be receiving some criticism from a stranger. So what? Move forward!

Pursue what you've always wanted to do! The most regrettable scenario is remaining stagnant in your current situation. Trust me, that’s far worse than temporarily returning to your parents’ home.

While I don’t harbor many regrets, the thought of not pursuing Architecture from the outset lingers in my mind.

What I've learned over the years is to not let my thoughts dictate my emotions, goals, or choices. I refuse to allow regret to overshadow my otherwise fulfilling life.

“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.”

— Denis Waitley

Recognizing Individual Paths

A major obstacle that hindered my progress was my tendency to compare myself to others. My ambition often led me to measure my worth against those around me.

I would think: This person is taller. That one is more attractive. This individual already has children. Another has completed her Master's degree.

I engaged in this comparison daily.

Stop that! I wasted too much time fretting over things beyond my control. Despite my achievements, I still found myself envious of an influencer's seemingly perfect life on Instagram.

Stop the negativity! You are on your unique journey. Every individual is distinct, and comparing yourself to others is futile—it's like comparing apples to oranges.

We are all human, yet each of us is extraordinary in our own right. The universe has a unique plan for you. Trust it and enjoy the ride!

“Life is like a roller coaster; live it, be happy, enjoy life.”

— Avril Lavigne

Gaining Clarity Through Perspective

Ask yourself frequently: What is the worst that could happen? This simple question can provide clarity when making decisions. It requires self-awareness regarding your environment and your desires. Is this how you want to spend your life?

If not, take action!
