Crafting a Life of Significance Over Success

Chapter 1: Defining True Success
What holds more value than mere success? While some may dismiss this as a trivial question, it’s crucial to delve deeper into what it truly means to lead a life that transcends success.
Success is often a universal aspiration, yet its meaning varies greatly among individuals. According to a well-known dictionary, success is defined as:
Success (noun) — the achievement of a goal or purpose. Oxford Languages
This definition is quite expansive. Achieving a goal can signify different things to different people. In contemporary society, many equate success with financial wealth, owning luxurious possessions, or attaining high status in their careers or communities. However, is that all there is to success? Surely, there must be more to it!
“Success is fine, but success is fleeting. Significance is lasting.” — Beth Brooke (1959-present)
True success reaches beyond superficial gains and ego. The term that embodies a higher level of achievement is significance. So, what distinguishes a life of significance from one of mere success? It fundamentally lies in focus—who you are and what you stand for.
Success is often self-centered, revolving around personal achievements. When life ends, the personal successes fade. In contrast, significance is altruistic, centered around the impact you have on others. The legacy of significance endures beyond your lifetime, influencing those you’ve touched.
A useful way to differentiate between the two is:
- Success revolves around what you gain.
- Significance is about what you give.
What legacy will you leave? Ultimately, how will your life benefit others?
In the video "What Should You Do With Your Life?" we explore the deeper questions about purpose and the impact of our choices.
Creating a Life of Significance
How can you cultivate a life of significance?
Consider documenting your experiences and insights in a journal or even publishing a book. Sharing your wisdom can assist others in their journeys, extending your influence beyond your lifetime.
Think about your financial legacy. While you might leave inheritance to family, consider establishing a foundation or trust that supports causes you care about, ensuring your contributions continue to make a difference.
The memories you create with others are also part of your significance. The example you set can resonate through generations, influencing your children and their descendants.
Who exemplifies significance in your life? Historical figures like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or influential business leaders such as Andrew Carnegie and Steve Jobs come to mind. Additionally, the authors and speakers whose words have inspired millions, such as C.S. Lewis and John Maxwell, have left indelible marks on many lives, including my own.
Lastly, personal relationships shape our significance. People like mentors, family members, and friends contribute to our legacies. Each person who has impacted your life plays a role in the story you leave behind.
In the video "How To Figure Out What To Do With Your Life," we discuss practical steps to discern your purpose and the significance you can achieve.
Living a Life of Impact
At life's end, what matters is not your personal achievements but the impact of your words and actions. A life rich in meaning and purpose, positively affecting others, is what truly counts.
“A person of character seeks true happiness in living a life of purpose and meaning, placing a higher value on significance than success.” — Michael Josephson (1942-present)
I believe most people share a common desire: to leave a lasting impression on the world and positively influence others' lives. You may wonder how a seemingly ordinary life can hold significance.
Remember, transformative change often occurs within relationships. Start by nurturing the connections in your life. Explore your heart and write about your experiences. Much of my writing focuses on positive change and intentionally creating a fulfilling life.
What inspires you?
It’s a fact that one day, we will no longer be here. What do you hope people will say about you after you’re gone? Will they remember you as someone who made a difference?
