Until not long ago, whenever we commanded our Amazon Alexa to laugh, she would respond with a variety of unsettling cackles. Even an accidental command, misheard by her AI, would produce similarly alarming sounds. Nowadays, requesting, “Alexa, laugh,” yields a more innocuous “Tee-hee.” This change came too late for my family, who experienced a truly terrifying incident a few years back.

One evening, as we were winding down for the night, a conversation in the kitchen prompted Alexa to emit a laugh so haunting that it sent shivers down our spines. The issue was that none of us realized it was our AI companion making the noise. The sudden laughter made us question if someone had entered our home.

We frantically checked all the doors and windows, inspected our phones and answering machine, and even scoured closets and under beds. To our relief, we found no intruder, but the unsettling sound lingered in our minds.

That night, I was too frightened to sleep alone in my room. Instead, I spent the hours tossing and turning on the sofa in my parents' bedroom, while we all remained wide awake, gripped by fear.

As I lay there, the thought crossed my mind: Could it have been Alexa? But fear held me back from checking her activity until morning. The night felt endless.

When daylight broke, I finally retrieved my laptop to investigate. It turned out that during our earlier conversation, something we said had been misinterpreted as a command for Alexa to laugh.

I was relieved that Amazon updated her laugh to something much less frightening. It’s a change that has eased my worries about mistaken hauntings.
