The Challenge of Establishing a Unified Truth in Society

Understanding the Concept of a Single Source of Truth
In the realm of information technology, the term "single source of truth" plays a critical role. While the concept is straightforward, applying it effectively can be challenging. The fundamental idea is that all data utilized by a system should originate from one primary location. When changes occur in that location, they should automatically reflect throughout the entire system.
A Practical Illustration
Consider a straightforward example involving an online retail platform. When the price of a product changes in the database, this adjustment should be evident on every page showcasing that item. It’s easy to see that relying on multiple sources of truth can create confusion. For instance, if an application draws from more than one database—an all-too-common scenario—and two databases hold differing prices for the same product, chaos ensues. If different versions of the website (like mobile and desktop) access various databases for pricing, it becomes clear that this could escalate into a significant issue as the system scales.
The Complexity of Human Perspectives
This concept sheds light on the chaotic nature of society. Each individual often considers themselves a unique source of truth. Even within a shared nation, ideology, or religion, personal interpretations diverge dramatically based on individual experiences and backgrounds. With hundreds of nations, thousands of languages, and countless ideologies and religions, achieving a cohesive understanding seems nearly impossible. Monotheistic religions grasped the significance of a singular truth over two millennia ago, a principle that continues to endure. Regardless of scientific advancements that challenge historical beliefs, those who adhere strictly to their religious texts often remain unmoved.
Reflecting on Disagreements
I often ponder how many disputes would dissipate if conflicting parties paused to consider the inherent challenge of merging fundamentally incompatible elements.
Current level of pessimistic optimism: 60%.
