A Transformative Musical Journey: My Unexpected Awakening

Written on

Chapter 1: The Beginning of My Musical Journey

Reflecting on the concept of ambition, it's intriguing to consider what makes someone truly "aspiring." This term indicates a desire to achieve a certain identity or skill, and it’s peculiar to think one might be unknowingly working toward a goal. That’s how my experience in 2020 unfolded.

How I Discovered Music Before 2020

My first encounter with music software occurred in 2016 when I stumbled upon GarageBand while exploring my college iPad. At that moment, I had zero knowledge about music creation—truly none at all. Sometimes, I still feel that way, but I remind myself that I've come a long way.

GarageBand opened my eyes to the realization that music combines both scientific and artistic elements. For me, the practical nature of science has always felt more tangible than the abstractness of art. As a child, I attempted to learn music, but my interests were primarily in video games and toys. The idea of mastering an instrument seemed utterly unattainable then, and even now at 24, the vastness of music continues to amaze me. My adult perspective gravitates toward music production, blending mechanics, creativity, and the unknown into something exhilarating.

For about two years, I dabbled with GarageBand, realizing it had not only educated me about music but had also empowered me to create it. As I gained confidence, I began crafting my own tracks—even if they were far from polished. It felt akin to a monumental achievement, like a paraplegic taking their first steps—awkward, but undeniably significant.

To clarify my musical role, I’ll admit that I don’t play traditional instruments. If one is nearby, I might experiment with it, but I don’t play in the conventional sense. My true identity lies in being a music engineer, focusing on designing and arranging sounds. I mix and master tracks, ensuring they resonate well with each other. Lacking the ability to play instruments, I rely on my technical skills to manipulate audio effectively.

Additionally, I take on the role of a producer. While often confused with engineering, producing involves guiding the creative process, whether through directing beats or collaborating with artists. Since I record over my own beats, I’m effectively producing myself.

Throughout my music-making journey, I oscillate between creative and technical spheres. When inspiration strikes, I switch into engineer mode to translate that emotion into sound. In this way, I function like both an architect and a builder—taking creative liberties while also being accountable for the execution. Once a track is produced, I step into the realm of performance, where vocals add another layer of complexity, requiring a distinct set of skills and motivation.

Ultimately, I identify as a music artist. Some may argue about my musicality or talent, but the essence lies in my ability to create music independently. That, to me, is what truly matters.

Chapter 2: The Unexpected Awakening During 2020

As I reflect, it’s clear that my "musical awakening" was catalyzed by the pandemic, compelling me to stay home and create music in my bedroom. Prior to this, I was already involved in music, albeit at a modest level. By late 2019, I had transitioned to producing on my desktop with GarageBand, a significant upgrade from my previous tablet efforts.

Many might argue that GarageBand isn't a "real" digital audio workstation (DAW), akin to claiming gourmet chef status while only having a microwave. Nevertheless, I managed to release my first official song in January 2020, which felt like a major milestone. As the months progressed, I created additional tracks, recognizing my growth and my ability to oversee the entire production process, despite feeling like I was only scratching the surface.

However, I quickly realized the limitations of using free software without professional-grade equipment. It was a step up from my earlier endeavors, but I needed to dive deeper into the craft.

Lock Down and New Beginnings

By April 2020, with the world in turmoil, I did what any introvert would do: I immersed myself in music. With more time on my hands, I made a pivotal decision to invest in Logic Pro X, a professional-grade software for music production. Transitioning to Logic felt like moving from a basic kitchen to a fully equipped culinary space. But having the tools doesn't guarantee skill.

Navigating Logic Pro came with challenges. I soon recognized the need for physical equipment, prompting me to purchase an array of items, from audio interfaces to microphones—essentially anything that could aid my craft. I considered these purchases as investments in my future.

My dedication intensified; I devoted hours to watching tutorials, exploring music theory, and diving deep into audio concepts. I became obsessed with every aspect of music production, seeking knowledge relentlessly.

This surge of access to resources and free time fueled a whirlwind of creativity and self-discovery. By August, my passion for music had grown to an all-consuming level, where the more I learned, the more I realized how much I didn't know.

At this stage, I found myself aligning with a profound ambition to master this intricate art. The unexpected progress I made felt like an organic evolution rather than a premeditated goal. It was a journey of exploration and growth, highlighting that 2020 was indeed a unique year—one that revealed an endless pursuit I could aspire to for a lifetime.
