Chapter 1: Celebrating Achievements and Reflecting on Choices
Dear Jeff,
I was thrilled to learn about your latest yacht being launched in the port of Rotterdam. Coming from Scotland, where the shipbuilding sector has seen a steep decline, I can only imagine the significant number of jobs that were created for this project. Kudos for contributing to the local economy—assuming the yacht remains in the Netherlands and isn’t redirected to Oman! And congratulations on treating yourself to such an extravagant gift; self-care is indeed important.
However, $485 million for a vessel meant for one individual seems a bit much, even in the realm of superyachts. I noticed that orders for these luxury boats have surged by 25% compared to last year. But I can't help but question the reasoning behind such a lavish expenditure. Was it your accountant who suggested this as a tax strategy? Or is it a reflection of a fragile ego? Is this a result of Amazon's impressive $14.3 billion profits—double that of the previous year? It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around it. After all, considering that 99.99999% of the world can thrive without a half-billion-dollar yacht, surely you could too.
I was also disheartened to discover that due to a likely oversight in either design or logistics, your yacht will require dismantling a historic bridge in Rotterdam to leave the port. As a former Environmental Impact Assessment consultant, I can confidently say that this should have been addressed during the feasibility study phase—perhaps by altering the yacht's design or choosing a different build location.
Yet, it seems that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Your remarkable boat builder has somehow persuaded the Port of Rotterdam that removing and reconstructing the bridge to ensure safe passage is an acceptable solution. As someone who values cultural heritage and has collaborated with experts in this field, this news is troubling. Why do we make efforts to mitigate impacts on cultural landmarks if we can just remove them when they obstruct our desires? Why didn’t we think of that before?
It would sit better with me if this were a defense project, a humanitarian hospital ship for Bangladesh, or anything that might serve a greater purpose rather than simply catering to the whims of one wealthy individual. It feels insulting, especially given the ongoing ecological crisis and rampant labor exploitation. It’s well-known that your employees face penalties for taking brief breaks. Meanwhile, you’re off indulging in spaceships and superyachts. You possess the financial resources, influence, and power to address numerous global issues. Yet, you choose to flaunt your status.
I am appalled that one individual can demand the dismantling of a bridge simply to enjoy his toy. I wouldn’t even dare to press the button on a bus to make it stop just for me. I must admit that I am somewhat impressed by your audacity and the thick skin it must require to take such actions. However, I’d never trade my empathy and values for even a fraction of your wealth. Some things—like integrity and taste—are simply not for sale or available via Prime delivery.
I’m certain you’ve contemplated ways to improve yourself. It struck me that you might consider using your new yacht for a more noble cause, especially since you’re in the vicinity. Perhaps you could assist individuals in distress while crossing the Channel in small, unsafe boats, which might have been purchased from Amazon. These people, much like yourself, are seeking a better, more secure life, and there’s so much you could offer them.
Wishing you luck in your quest for redemption.
Best regards,
Alex
