Chapter 1: The Reunion of Smosh's Founders
Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, the creative minds behind Smosh—one of YouTube's longest-standing and most beloved comedy collectives—have come back together to reclaim their brand from Mythical Entertainment, which is run by the YouTube duo Rhett & Link.
Padilla and Hecox launched Smosh in 2006, originally aiming to amuse one another. Over the years, they gained a massive following, boasting over 75 million subscribers across various platforms. In 2017, however, Padilla stepped away from Smosh, expressing a loss of creative spark. He ventured out independently, while Hecox continued to steer Smosh through the turbulent times following the collapse of its former parent company, Defy Media, in 2018.
In 2019, Mythical Entertainment acquired Smosh, allowing the brand to keep producing its signature comedy sketches, gaming videos, and internet challenges with a diverse cast of creators. Recently, after reconnecting, Padilla and Hecox made the decision to collaborate again, securing a majority stake in Smosh with assistance from Breeze Financial, a creator capital provider. Rhett & Link will continue to hold a minority stake and will offer advisory support.
"I genuinely want to return to our origins, and part of that involves owning the company so we can steer Smosh in any creative direction we desire," Padilla expressed. He and Hecox have plans to resume writing, directing, and performing in comedy sketches on the main Smosh channel. Their first collaboration in over six years is set to debut on June 30, with a commitment to releasing a new comedy video biweekly.
Reflecting on their past, Hecox acknowledged, "By the time Anthony departed from Smosh, our friendship was not in a great place." He noted that their communication had stagnated, but their time apart allowed for personal growth. "It's quite remarkable how perfectly this has all aligned. Our friendship needed to end for us to reunite," he remarked.
Rhett & Link expressed pride in their achievements with Smosh and remain enthusiastic supporters of Padilla and Hecox. "The spirit of acquiring Smosh is somewhat reflective of the spirit of selling it," McLaughlin commented.
Fans have responded with excitement and nostalgia on social media, eagerly anticipating the return of Padilla and Hecox together on screen.
