Chapter 1 The Pursuit of a PhD
How long does it truly take to earn a PhD?
In October 2023, I embarked on the search for PhD programs and positions, unaware that being selective would not be an option. With a background in neuroscience, I assumed that specializing in computational neuroscience would be straightforward—after all, it’s just a slight extension of my current field. However, I quickly learned that achieving this goal is far more challenging than anticipated.
As of May 2024, I still grapple with understanding the barriers preventing me from securing a PhD in my desired area. I have attended conferences, learned MATLAB as a programming language, revamped my cover letter, and sent out nearly a hundred applications. Perhaps my lack of publications has hindered my progress.
In Australia, university professors prioritize candidates with publications. Without a research paper, securing a scholarship becomes nearly impossible, which means labs are unlikely to provide funding. Additionally, my background may not align well with the demands of computational neuroscience. Many positions require specific experience in programming and neuroimaging. Although I possess these skills, I recognize that I still need further training. Simply stating "I'm willing and eager to learn" isn't sufficient when competing against candidates with direct research experience.
Furthermore, the PhD application process seems overly saturated. The demand for positions far exceeds the available opportunities, making it feel as if luck plays a significant role in determining success. Another hurdle is the lack of networking; professors are often hesitant to respond to unsolicited applications from unknown candidates.
To this day, I continue my quest for a PhD, adjusting my interests and lowering my expectations. I've shifted my perspective and remain open to new possibilities. I wonder how many others are encountering similar challenges. I’ve heard stories of individuals who eventually secured their PhDs after a year of effort.
It's crucial to maintain an open mind about your passions. There are two perspectives to consider: (1) persevere in your current path or (2) contemplate a career change. Regardless of the choice, the key is to sustain your passion for whatever you pursue. This passion shouldn’t be confined to a specific career title; it should represent a means of contributing to the community and finding fulfillment. I eagerly await the moment of realization in my journey.
