# My Grandfather's Timeless Wisdom on Making Friends
Written on
Chapter 1: A Unique Friendship
As a young boy, I was shy and often kept to myself, trying to dodge bullies who found amusement in tormenting me at school. During holidays, I would escape to a quaint village to spend time with my best friend, who happened to be in his sixties—my grandfather. Our bond lasted until he passed away at the age of 92.
Initially, my quiet nature was beneficial for my grandfather; it allowed him to engage me in conversations and impart lessons about managing the farm. However, when I turned 14, he sensed it was time for me to venture out into the world, to forge friendships and perhaps even find a girl to dance with at the local gatherings.
My Grandfather's Strategy for Social Interaction
One evening, after I had spent the day chopping wood, my grandfather suggested we sit outside his home to enjoy the fresh air and watch the stars, while also observing the townsfolk heading to the dance. His house was situated along the main street, a thoroughfare buzzing with evening activity.
I was puzzled about why he wanted us to sit outside. I inquired if it was for stargazing, to which he replied, “No, we’re here so you can learn how to connect with people.”
As night fell, villagers passed by, some stopping to greet him and others bringing gifts like fresh vegetables or rent money. That evening, I realized my grandfather was a respected figure in the community.
Key Lessons Learned
- Visibility is Key
My grandfather welcomed each passerby, teaching me that to make friends, one must be approachable: “Sit at the door so they can come to you, rather than you seeking them out.” I hesitated, asking what if no one came. He assured me, “They will come—everyone needs help or companionship eventually, and when they do, they’ll be grateful to you.”
- Create Positive Experiences
As conversations flowed, neighbors would mention their needs, and my grandfather would offer my assistance. He advised me to approach each task with kindness: “Make them feel better about spending time with you than if they hadn’t.” He encouraged me to engage genuinely, asking about their well-being and leaving with a firm handshake and a smile.
- Stability in Change
Each night, I sat at my grandfather’s door, jotting down the favors he received. Gradually, these requests transformed into invitations for social activities, from playing soccer to attending dances. I found myself making friends and enjoying a vibrant social life.
My grandfather emphasized the importance of being a consistent presence in people's lives: “You remain at the door, allowing them to come to you. They may forget your name but will cherish the memories of you from their childhood, and that’s a powerful bond.”
This strategy worked wonders for me, and I can genuinely say it changed my life.
