# Finding Purpose Beyond Popularity in Writing

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Popularity
In my exploration of writing on Medium, I’ve encountered numerous articles aimed at attracting readers and generating income. However, the pieces that resonate most with me challenge emerging writers to seek their true audience.
Are we driven to write solely for widespread appeal, maximum views, and financial gain? Or is our mission to convey our unique perspectives and make our voices heard?
Popularity Doesn’t Matter to Me
I wouldn't classify myself as a popular individual, even on this platform. I grew up with the expectation to be sociable, humorous, and engaging—traits associated with popularity. In truth, I identify as an introvert, somewhat friendly but not outgoing, often lost in my own thoughts.
Honestly, I've reached a point in my life where the quest for popularity holds little significance for me, and it feels liberating. I once pondered how to gain popularity on Medium, assuming that a larger readership equated to greater financial reward. Yet, one article prompted me to reflect on my true purpose.
So, should I aim to write about widely appealing subjects that promise to be beneficial, such as budgeting, spreadsheet use, saving money, or starting a blog?
The answer is no. Many writers cover these topics extensively, and frankly, they bore me to tears. If I sought knowledge about budgeting or taxes, I would simply visit my local library for books on the subject.
Even if I were an expert in personal finance, I wouldn’t choose to write about it, as I find those subjects neither intriguing nor enlightening. The thought of detailing my monthly budget is dreary, and doing taxes on a Monday evening is hardly my idea of fun.
It’s not solely financial topics that fail to captivate me. Numerous subjects, including celebrity gossip and reality television, also fall flat. I have no interest in the Kardashians or shows centered around dating or survival competitions. Occasionally, I enjoy watching baking competitions where contestants create intricate cakes; that’s genuinely entertaining.
Sports? Not for me. I lack any athletic inclination and can’t fathom watching the Super Bowl, World Series, or even the Olympics. To put it plainly, I have no passion for sports of any kind.
Chapter 2: Discovering My True Voice
So, what drives my writing passion?
I intend to focus on subjects that genuinely intrigue me, with religion being at the forefront. I enjoy exploring the world’s major religions and the lessons they impart.
My skepticism towards religious claims, especially regarding miracles, fuels my writing. I aim to articulate my doubts about sacred texts, miraculous events, and theological assertions, such as the concept of a global flood.
Science also fascinates me. Though I began my academic journey as a physics major before switching fields, my passion for physics remains intact. I graduated with a biology degree and continue to find the natural sciences captivating. Recently, I stumbled upon a book on Amazon that piqued my interest, even if the math is beyond my grasp.
I once read a compelling article by a young astronomer challenging established scientific beliefs. He posits that "dark matter," which is thought to influence stellar rotation, might not exist. Instead, he advocates for a reevaluation of our understanding of physics, suggesting that "modified Newtonian dynamics" (MOND) could offer a more accurate explanation.
Philosophy, too, is a topic of interest. I recently delved into a paper by a late philosopher who claims to have logically disproven God through the existence of evil. After thorough examination, I find his argument flawed, despite my own skepticism about divine beings.
I’ve also studied works by a Catholic philosopher advocating five logical proofs for God's existence, none of which I find persuasive.
Lastly, I feel compelled to write about culture. I believe there are areas where we can improve, both domestically and internationally. I am particularly critical of what has been labeled “toxic masculinity,” a real issue I’ve witnessed firsthand.
I aim to address the troubling “manosphere,” advocate for increased respect towards women, combat incel violence, and challenge sexual harassment and gender discrimination. I also want to emphasize the importance of accepting the LGBTQ+ community.
These are the themes I wish to explore in my writing. In time, I may establish a blog to delve deeper into these subjects, even if they aren’t deemed popular.
I’ve come to understand that diverse perspectives arise from unique life experiences and values. My writing isn’t intended for everyone; rather, I hope to connect with those who appreciate fresh viewpoints and are open to challenging mainstream ideas, like MOND, or critically examining popular concepts.
As a self-proclaimed contrarian, I enjoy playing devil’s advocate with various ideas, arguments, hypotheses, and policies.
About Me
As mentioned earlier, I identify as an introvert and plan to seek a formal diagnosis from a psychiatrist this year. Some have suggested that I might be autistic, which wouldn’t surprise me. Perhaps this is why I can approach various subjects from a different angle. I’ve read that neurodivergent individuals often possess high intelligence, a notion I find flattering.
I also have a tendency to be hyperanalytical. While I resist labeling myself a perfectionist, I acknowledge that I grapple with it. This could explain my thought processes.
I take pride in being hyperanalytical; I cherish the ability to think deeply, reason, and learn. I am an avid reader.
That’s a brief insight into who I am, but there’s more to come. Now, I’m curious about you.
