Finding Depth in Daily Life: A Review of Thomas Moore's Insights

Chapter 1: Introduction to "Care of the Soul"
This year, I revisited the 25th anniversary edition of Thomas Moore's “Care of the Soul,” originally released in 1992, now featuring a new introduction by the author. My initial encounter with this book was during a Sunday School class in the mid-1990s, and now, three decades later, I approach it with renewed perspective and a deeper understanding of life.
Moore, a depth psychologist with experiences ranging from being a monk to a university educator, presents “Care of the Soul” as a foundational work aimed at reconnecting psychology with spirituality. Instead of focusing on rectifying perceived flaws in life, he emphasizes the significance of cherishing the small details of daily experiences alongside significant life choices.
The book is structured into four main sections:
- Care of the Soul: An overview that emphasizes “Honoring Symptoms as a Voice of the Soul.”
- Care of the Soul in Everyday Life: A comprehensive exploration of themes such as self, family, childhood, love (including feelings of jealousy and envy), power dynamics, depression, health, and professional life.
- Spiritual Practice and Psychological Depth: Here, Moore differentiates between spirituality and soulfulness, arguing that spirituality without a soulful foundation can become superficial or even neurotic.
- Care of the World’s Soul: An appreciation for the world's “animated” soul, highlighting that this understanding transcends mere psychological projection.
An Alternative Perspective
Moore's insights often challenge the conventional, simplistic views on self-improvement that suggest correcting faults rather than embracing and experiencing them. He asserts that “the soul is not ego; it encompasses the profound depths of both the individual and society, comprising the myriad complex elements that shape our identities.”
My key takeaway from this reading is the concept of mindfulness, which imbues my life with deeper significance. This transcends mere surface-level experiences; it is about enriching our daily routines with awareness and respect, thereby revealing the hidden dimensions of our existence.
I am reminded of Robert Pirsig's “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” which shares a similar quest for understanding values, albeit through the lens of a father-son motorcycle journey across the country.
The Soulful Space of My Workspace
While immersing myself in “Care of the Soul,” I became increasingly aware of how I had crafted a soulful corner in my workspace, adorned with various meaningful tokens from my life.
Among these items are a pair of military pilot wings: one set belonging to my father, who earned his in the Marines, and my own first set from the USAF. My father passed away in 2020, leaving behind a rich legacy, including his contributions to the early space race.
Also featured is a mug my wife and I purchased during our first canal boat holiday in England. This form of vacation has captivated us since 1988, and we have cherished it for over three decades. Opposite my desk hang seven maps that showcase the canals we've navigated together.
A thoughtful Christmas gift from my older sister, a hand-stitched leather journal, bears the inscription, “Write something profound!” Though it may remain unwritten, it serves as a reminder of family and creativity.
Lastly, a carved wooden rhinoceros, gifted by my wife during her last trip to West Africa, resonates deeply with me. My USAF callsign was “Rhino,” and both my wife and I have embarked on journeys to Africa for our respective NGO work.
These items not only enhance the corner of my desk but also infuse my workspace with emotional resonance, encouraging a mindful, soulful approach to life.
Embracing the Everyday
Engaging with Thomas Moore’s “Care of the Soul” has deepened my connection to the everyday aspects of life, fostering wonder, introspection, and creativity without the burden of guilt often associated with self-improvement efforts.
Ultimately, this journey may lead to a gentler, less isolating experience as we acknowledge the soulfulness that resides within us and surrounds us, transforming our daily lives into something sacred.
