Embracing the Sun: A Celebration of Nature's Power

Chapter 1: The Joy of Sunlight
This winter in Duluth has been exceptionally frigid, with temperatures plunging to 40 degrees below zero. Yet, when the sun breaks through the clouds, it feels as though I've encountered a divine presence.
People often assume that the cold winters here render life bleak, questioning our choice to remain in Duluth instead of relocating to warmer Florida. However, we enjoy numerous sunny days amidst our snowy landscape. The contrast of white snow against a clear blue sky, illuminated by the sun, is truly enchanting. Why would anyone wish to escape to Florida when the sun makes life so vibrant?
The sun is our closest encounter with a deity, shaping our world more than any mythical figure ever could. When we gaze at the sun, we witness the force that has crafted our existence—not a bearded man proclaiming "let there be light," but rather the sun itself.
The sun's gravity has drawn our planet into a perfect orbit, creating an environment that's "just right," akin to Goldilocks' tale. It cradles our world like a nurturing mother. Initially, Earth was merely a barren rock, but after approximately a billion years and through the sun's magic, life began to bloom on its surface.
While scientists have yet to fully unravel the mystery of abiogenesis, one compelling theory posits that essential organic compounds may have formed on dust particles surrounding the sun prior to Earth's creation. According to this view, ionizing radiation from the sun ignited the spark of life, illustrating the sun's pivotal role in our existence.
The first video titled "Sun-Worshippers Built This Massive Altar 3,000 Years Ago | National Geographic - YouTube" delves into ancient cultures that revered the sun, showcasing the historical significance of sun worship.
Modern science reveals that sunlight is composed of various components, and if we're to celebrate the sun, we should understand its nature. Sunlight consists of three main types: (1) visible light, ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 micrometers, (2) ultraviolet light, which is shorter than 0.4 micrometers, and (3) infrared radiation, longer than 0.8 micrometers.
In addition, cosmic rays—highly destructive particles sent our way by the sun—pose a significant threat. Fortunately, our heliosphere and magnetosphere shield us from these hazards, allowing us to thrive.
When contemplating the sun, it’s vital to recognize it as both a creative and destructive force. This fiery sphere should not be romanticized as merely a cheerful yellow orb. Our atmosphere acts as a protective barrier, permitting only the sun's warmth to reach us while shielding us from its more harmful effects. Perhaps we should also extend our appreciation to the atmosphere for its role.
The sun is a source of bliss for our minds. The chemicals that induce feelings of joy and happiness are gifts from the sun. When sunlight penetrates our brains, it fuels our natural world and elevates our spirits.
In our community gatherings, we celebrate what we call a "braingasm." This euphoric energy coursing through us originates from the sun. Is the sun itself a manifestation of this ecstatic energy? Observing the universe, one can see countless celestial bodies pulsating in harmony—a cosmic dance that we too partake in when we allow this bliss to resonate within us.
When we gather to celebrate, even in the heart of winter in Duluth, we look upward and express gratitude to our divine sun for all it provides.
Our culture is rich with songs honoring the sun, especially during the winter months, reminding us that cold spells and tough times are temporary. Nature ensures that sunlight graces us in cycles, and always, a symphony of light plays in the heavens, a mere fraction of which we can perceive.
Imagine the joy and grandeur of this celestial symphony if it were fully visible. The sun holds a modest role within this cosmic orchestra.
As we reflect on these thoughts, let us raise our voices in song dedicated to the sun. May you bask in sunlight throughout your days and revel in the moonlight during the nights. Embrace happiness, joy, and a sense of unity beyond the self.
Here is our song performed today by the New Heretics, featuring guitarist Rango Jangleheart. Join in and enjoy!
Chapter 2: The Spiritual Connection to the Sun
The second video titled "Should Atheists Worship the Sun? | Dr. Eric Steinhart on Religious Naturalism & Spirituality" explores the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of sun worship, prompting us to consider the deeper meanings behind our connection to this celestial body.
