Embracing the Struggles of Trying Something New

Chapter 1: The Journey of Trying New Things
Let’s face it; we’ve all experienced that moment of hesitation when stepping into uncharted territory—be it as a writer, video producer, or even attempting to play a musical instrument. In these instances, our mind and body often seem to work against us. You might feel anxious, struggle with your words, and find that the outcome isn’t what you envisioned. Rather than feeling inspired, you might instead feel disheartened, tempted to abandon your efforts altogether.
However, it’s crucial to understand that facing challenges in the beginning is completely normal. Struggling at first isn’t just acceptable; it’s a vital part of the process. This phenomenon is known as the learning curve, and believe me, everyone experiences it, even if it isn’t always visible.
The Illusion of Effortless Talent
How often do you scroll through social media, only to feel inadequate while watching others who seem so skilled and perfect? We often forget the countless hours of practice, failures, and frustrations that those individuals faced along the way. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok can amplify this misconception, making us focus solely on polished final products instead of the chaotic journey that led to them.
As a result, we tend to compare ourselves to a curated highlight reel and hesitate to share our work while we’re still in the learning phase.
Enjoy the Process—Even If You’re Not Great at It
If you find joy in a project, don’t let slow progress deter you from pursuing it. I remember my early attempts at creating reels. I envisioned producing viral content filled with sleek transitions and catchy music. The reality? Awkward cuts, clumsy angles, and a lot of stumbling around with features. It felt more embarrassing than exciting, and I almost deleted everything.
Then, a shift in my mindset occurred. Instead of aiming for perfection, I decided to share my work and see what happened. I uploaded a few videos, and gradually, I gained momentum and improved my skills. My reels may not have gone viral (yet!), but the process has become genuinely enjoyable.

Finding Freedom in Accepting Imperfection
This fear of judgment is common, and trust me, I’ve been there. The truth is, most people aren’t focused on your failures as much as you think they are. While criticism will always exist, there are also individuals willing to provide constructive feedback and support. Don’t let the negativity of a few overshadow the encouragement from those who appreciate your efforts.
When you engage in the practice of being less than perfect, it becomes easier to ignore judgment from others. Accepting that struggling is a normal part of learning can empower you to try new things without fear.
The Mindset of Embracing Imperfection
When it comes to success, people generally have one of two mindsets: a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe there’s no room for improvement, while those with a growth mindset understand that they can learn and grow through dedication and adaptability.
Reflect on your past experiences and remember how far you’ve come. Apply that same growth mindset when trying something new that excites you. Here’s my approach when starting fresh with a growth mindset:
- Take Small Steps: Avoid feeling overwhelmed by breaking your goals into manageable tasks and celebrating each achievement.
- Laugh Off Mistakes: Accept that errors are part of the process! A lighthearted attitude can alleviate pressure.
- Find Your Community: Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals who are also learning can significantly impact your experience.
- Focus on Progress: Keep track of your own improvements without comparing yourself to others.
The Value of Imperfection
When faced with challenges, imperfections can signal learning and growth. As you prepare to embark on a new endeavor, brace yourself for initial missteps. Embrace these difficulties as signs that you are stepping outside your comfort zone. Over time, those awkward moments will evolve into the joy of mastering something you love.
The outcomes may not always be perfect, but the journey of learning is worth every moment.
So go ahead and be delightfully unskilled at something new!
