A Call to Writers: Crafting a Vision for Our Future

Written on

Chapter 1: The Urgency of Our Narrative

Are you, like me, weary of the prevailing narrative from the Global North? The notion that the United States—please refrain from calling it America as that encompasses an entire continent—stands as the epicenter of global events, heavily reinforced by Hollywood's storytelling? Do you experience climate anxiety, political disillusionment, or a compelling urge to reshape the pervasive narrative of despair and indifference expertly crafted by mainstream media and those who manipulate it?

We must dismantle this suffocating belief that “there is no alternative.” Our most pressing crisis extends beyond climate change; it is about the degradation of Earth’s vital systems, exacerbated by voracious capitalism. The situation appears dire.

The gradual decline of healthcare, education, and public services; the deterioration of infrastructure; the erosion of democracy; and the emergence of modern demagogues—like Donald Trump (US), Boris Johnson (UK), Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil), and others—illustrate a predatory agenda that dehumanizes relationships and devastates our planet in the name of profit.

We don’t need to speculate about where this trajectory leads; many regions, particularly the poorest ones, are already experiencing its harsh realities. Record-breaking heatwaves, landslides, unprecedented hurricanes, massive floods, heartbreaking wildfires, and collapsing food chains are just a few visible signs.

This list could extend indefinitely. Each year, the period surrounding the solstice transforms into an increasingly desperate endurance test. However, here's the crux: understanding and addressing the world's energy system requires us to look beyond the latest headlines. We must adopt a broader perspective: humanity holds a unique opportunity to construct a sustainable future.

I identify as an optimist, albeit a realistic one. Optimism is rooted in the belief that we can enact meaningful change. As Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Romer articulates, there exists both “complacent optimism” and “conditional optimism.” The former resembles a child eagerly awaiting a gift; the latter embodies a child contemplating building a treehouse: “If I gather some wood and nails and convince my friends to help, we can create something remarkable.”

At the very moment we are inundated with records that seem “unprecedented,” “uncharted,” and “unpredictable,” the world is also constructing incredible solutions. The expansion of renewable energy capacity surged by 50% last year, with wind and solar outpacing any electricity source in history, even fossil fuels. In India, coal-generated electricity fell below 50% for the first time since 1966, indicating that 2023 might mark a peak in global emissions due to renewable energy growth. We urgently need more of this conditional optimism.

This is where YOU come into play; a new narrative is essential—one that resonates deeply and bridges political divides, appealing to a wide range of audiences. It should be straightforward yet profound, anchored in scientific truth rather than personal biases. This narrative must be so compelling that it cuts through the noise of modern life and addresses our fundamental needs and aspirations. For this, we require a timeless structure of restoration as our foundation.

Edward Bernays once remarked, “We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.” The true power of storytelling lies not only in its entertainment value but also in its ability to mobilize and transform societies, restoring balance to a world in turmoil.

This time, the narrative must originate from the heroic stories found in overlooked regions of the globe, where everyday heroes triumph against insurmountable odds. It is time for the Global South to assume a central role, illuminating the untold and marginalized stories that urgently need a voice.

Research indicates that the tipping point for societal change occurs when just 25% of the population commits to a cause. Once this threshold is crossed, a rapid alignment with the new direction emerges. As noted in a relevant study, “The power of small groups comes not from their authority or wealth but from their commitment to the cause.”

While this may seem daunting, I believe that within you lies a transformative story waiting to be told—a narrative capable of igniting a revolution in thought and action, one word at a time.

Southern winds,

Ricky
