Understanding the Writer's Journey
Greetings, fellow writers!
As you embark on your writing journey, you'll encounter numerous avenues to express yourself and create an impact. However, navigating these options can be overwhelming and time-consuming. With an abundance of online resources available for novice writers, it's easy to feel lost.
I made several errors early on due to my lack of experience, resulting in wasted effort and dwindling motivation. Have you ever felt the same way? Today, I’ll share three significant mistakes I made while writing online, in hopes that you can avoid them.
"Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself." — Eleanor Roosevelt
Section 1.1: Mistake #1 - Writing Without a Schedule
Initially, writing was a delightful hobby for me. However, if you aspire to turn it into a side hustle, it demands serious commitment and focus, akin to any important job. To make a meaningful impact, consistency is crucial. It’s essential to post regularly—ideally, almost daily—so your work doesn’t get lost in the fast-paced online landscape.
What to Do:
- Develop a content calendar.
- Share your work across multiple platforms.
- Utilize tags and references to boost visibility.
Section 1.2: Mistake #2 - Not Focusing on Specific Topics
In the early stages, exploring various subjects is perfectly fine. However, if your goal is to cultivate a dedicated audience, it’s vital to identify 2-3 niche topics that resonate with you. Specializing can elevate your status to that of an expert as you dive deeper into your chosen themes.
What to Do:
- Concentrate on topics where you possess some knowledge.
- Leverage trending hashtags.
- Organize your content to appeal to a range of readers, from beginners to experts.
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
Section 1.3: Mistake #3 - Ignoring Other Creators
The third mistake I made was fixating solely on my work and neglecting to engage with other writers in my niche. If you have identified your niche, a simple search can reveal popular figures in that area and their work.
What to Do:
- Identify 2-3 influential creators in your niche.
- Discover the platforms where they are most active.
- Engage with their content by commenting and sharing.
- Consider reaching out for potential collaborations—this is an excellent way to gain visibility.
In Conclusion
To recap, here are the three mistakes I made as a budding writer. How many of these resonate with you? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
With love,
Ankita
